It’s ridiculous how film certification is connected with politics in our country and the latest to face it is Udta Punjab which is based on the drug issues of Punjab and is not getting any certificate from CBFC unless they make 89 major cuts to the movie.
The film was set to release on 17th June but now it doesn’t seems like it will be released anytime sooner. At first, CBFC demanded 49 cuts from the movie and when the director and producer send it to the review committee, things got even worse.
They demanded them to remove ‘Punjab‘ from the title and make 89 major cuts and after that the film will be released with Adults only certificate. I must tell you that the 89 cuts include the drugging scene and all the abusive words.
This is a shameful step by the CBFC because Udta Punjab is looking to be the most honest movie in a long time and it demands those words and drugging scenes because that is the truth. But CBFC thinks that watching and hearing someone on screen abusing will spoil our youth.
Another controversy is that the same abusive words are allowed to be kept in movies ( Waiting had the F-word numerous number of times) but the same abusive language is considered immoral in Hindi.
Pahlaj Nihalani released a statement saying that Anurag Kashyap is accusing him falsely and that they can get the certificate after making those 89 cuts and removing Punjab from the title.
He added that no political interference is there in CBFC. But seriously, if there wasn’t the involvement of politicians then why would someone have problem with the title of the movie and that too when there are elections in Punjab next year.
Now, Anurag Kashyap has decided to go to High Court after all this and things will not get a bit cozier because this can change the whole scenario of CBFC. But it is important too because since Pahlaj has been selected as the director of CBFC nothing is going right.
