Ryan Reynolds starring 2011s Green Lantern Movie failed to perform at box offices and clearly it was a disaster. Disaster in a way, it hardly collected $220 Million while over $200 Million was spent on its production. So, what went wrong with 2011s Green Lantern Movie?
In summer 2011, The Avengers had not yet assembled, Christian Bale was still the Dark Knight and believe or not Ryan Reynolds was still trying to get a Deadpool movie made, DCEU was about to get start with Green Lantern, Batman: The Dark Knight broke records in earning at box offices, everything was fantastic and flawless and then Warner Bros dropped Green Lantern on big screen.
Green Lantern was a seriously important film for Warner Bros and this was something they’re trying to get for a long time but when it finally made it to the screen, Warner Bros ended up converting sci-fi story into an ironic superhero origin story.
Believe it or not, Green Lantern Movie CGI was one of the worst CGI ever seen in a mainstream studio but let’s not get there!
The question what went wrong with Green Lantern Movie is yet to answer. So, first of all, let’s talk about Green Lantern storyline.
This isn’t going to be a comparison of the movie to DC comics, but the story wasn’t fit with actions. Green Lantern storyline was pretty lame and in addition to it, CGI made it look worst.
In 2008, Marvel’s Iron Man and DC’s The Dark Knight became a box office phenomenon and Warner Bros started looking into seeing how they could bring more DC Superheroes to the screen.
A bad storyline of such a huge movie with $200 million budget, didn’t go well for Warner Bros.
In an interview with Yahoo’ Movies Ryan Reynolds said this:
“When we shot Green Lantern, nobody auditioning for the role of Green Lantern was given the opportunity to read the script, because the script didn’t exist. I’m not complaining about it – it was an opportunity of a lifetime, and if I were to go back and retrace my steps, I would probably do everything the exact same way.”
The thing is Warner Bros expecting Green Lantern Movie to be good as 2008s Iron Man but Iron Man went right, Green Lantern went wrong and the results were critically panned.
At that time, DCEU (DC Extended Universe) was struggling to give a world class superhero movie while Marvel was rising high with Captain America: The First Avenger, Thor, Thor: The Dark World, Iron Man 2, Iron Man 3, Avengers. Avengers Age of Ultron, Captain America: Winter Soldier and the only movie DCEU had was Man of Steel which is also a critically panned movie, directed by Zack Snyder.
Batman v Superman did raise the bar at its most but then again DC failed at box offices because Warner Bros, this time expecting over a billion dollar flick but failed miserably.
Now, we are set to see a Green Lantern Reboot in 2020 after the two Justice League Movies and here why Green Lantern will not feature in Justice League.
Meanwhile, DCEU is all set to release it’s next and probably the biggest superhero movie Justice League next year.
So, what’s your take on 2011s Green Lantern Movie?
